About the museum

In 1896 Georges Clemenceau rented an apartment with a garden in the Passy district of Paris. He kept it for more than thirty years, including while he was prime minister, minister of the Interior and then minister of War, because he refused to live in an official residence.

After his death in 1929, his family decided to turn the rooms into a museum, preserving the décor as he had left it. In 1931 his children donated the furniture and objects, except for a few pieces such as Claude Monet’s painting “Le Bloc”. The museum opened in November 1931, run by an association. In 1932 James Douglas, who had bought the building, gave it to the institution, which then became a private foundation recognised as being in the public interest (reconnue d'utilité publique).

The apartment and its garden were listed as monuments historiques in 1955. In 2012 the museum received the “Maison des Illustres” label from the Ministry of Culture. The route includes the study with his desk, the dining room, the bedroom, the bathroom and the garden.
