About the museum
The museum occupies former underground quarries in Passy, dug as early as the Middle Ages. At the end of the 15th century the Minim friars founded a convent there, surrounded by seven hectares of vineyards, and converted the quarries into vast wine cellars. The convent disappeared during the Revolution, but the memory of the vineyard survives in the names of nearby streets, such as rue Vineuse and rue des Vignes.
In the 20th century the cellars were used to store the stock of the Eiffel Tower restaurant before housing the Musée du Vin. Since 1984 the museum has belonged to the Conseil des Échansons de France, a fraternity founded in 1954 to defend and promote French wine appellations.
The vaulted galleries hold a collection of more than 2,000 objects related to the vine and wine: winegrowers’ tools, old presses, barrels, tableware, antique glasses and reconstructed scenes with wax figures depicting wine trades. Since 2023 new operators have renovated the site, which is now called “Le M. Musée du Vin”. It also includes a shop, a restaurant, tasting courses and jazz evenings in the cellars.
