About the museum
The Musée communal de la Résistance et de la Déportation was housed in the former town hall of Vénissieux, on Place Léon-Sublet. The building, constructed between 1880 and 1882, served as the town hall from 1881 to 1975 before it housed the museum. Today it bears the name Maison Henri Rol-Tanguy.
The city is transforming the site into a House of Memories, which will be named after Olga Bancic, a resistance fighter of Romanian origin. Work began in summer 2025 and is due to last until autumn 2027: the former town hall is being renovated, keeps its architectural features and original furnishings, and is receiving an extension of more than 900 m² over two levels.
The future site will tell the story of Vénissieux and its residents in five sections: the origins, the horticultural village, the industrial town, the resistance town (World War II, the commune’s self-liberation, the rescue of Jewish people in August 1942), and the “mosaïque vénissiane,” built from a collection drawn from residents.
