About the museum
Condorcet's birthplace dates from the late 17th century. This bourgeois house belonged to the Gaudry family, to which the mother of Nicolas de Condorcet (1743–1794), philosopher, mathematician and statesman, also belonged. It remained privately owned until 1989, when the town of Ribemont acquired it.
The museum is set up in memory of Condorcet and of Ribemont's past. It was inaugurated by Robert Badinter in 2001, and the house holds the “Maison des Illustres” label. The collections also commemorate other figures linked to the town, such as the royal architect Nicolas Blondel and General Saint-Hilaire.
