About the museum

The Maison de Marie-Jeanne is a municipal museum that opened in July 2008 in Alaincourt, in the Aisne. It is named after Marie-Jeanne Delville, a trained seamstress and passionate collector, who over the years gathered everyday objects from the Oise valley to pass them on to younger generations and travelers alike, creating a link between generations.

The route is organized into seven thematic, playful and interactive spaces. An introduction is devoted to the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who travelled through the region by canoe in 1876. Then come flax and its uses, from thread to lace and old sewing machines; laundry care, with washing and irons; the fashion of the 1920s and Art Deco; toys; music, from gramophones to hi-fi systems; and a space that changes according to the museum’s current events. A temporary exhibition room completes the visit.
