About the museum

The Musée d’Argonne originated in a Louis XVI museum founded in 1936 at the initiative of the mayor of Varennes and Bishop Aymond. Looted in 1940, it was turned into the Argonne museum. It received the “Musée de France” label in 2003 and brings together the old collection, the collection of the association Terre d’Argonne and departmental collections on deposit.

The museum covers two major events in the region’s history: the arrest of Louis XVI and the royal family at Varennes on June 21, 1791, and the First World War. A model of the town at the time of the Revolution and nine paintings devoted to Marie-Antoinette illustrate the first theme. Objects, weapons, uniforms and photographs, along with a model of mine warfare on the Butte de Vauquois, recall the second.

The rooms also present the arts and popular traditions of the Argonne: local glassware, faience from Waly and Les Islettes, Gallo-Roman terra sigillata pottery, and costumes and tools of woodworkers. The museum is near the American memorial to the battles of the Argonne. According to the Musées de la Meuse network, it is closed for an indefinite period.
