About the museum
The Musée de la Princerie occupies a 16th-century mansion (hôtel particulier) in the heart of Verdun's old town. Its collections have been brought together since 1822 under the name Musée d’art et d’histoire de Verdun, and tell the story of the town and its surroundings from prehistory to the eve of the First World War.
The collection is encyclopaedic: antiquities, works of art, paintings, faience, sculptures and weapons. Archaeological finds from local excavations show how the area was settled from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Medieval sculptures illustrate devotion to the Virgin Mary and the cult of saints in Lorraine, and the paintings include works by the artists from the Meuse region Jules Bastien-Lepage and Hector Leroux.
Everyday life in the 18th and 19th centuries is evoked by traditional furniture and an extensive collection of faience from regional factories. The garden continues the visit in the Romantic spirit of the 19th century.
