About the museum
The Langres Musée d’art et d’histoire occupies a contemporary building opened in 1997 in the heart of the town. Its collections have been built up since the 19th century thanks to collectors and donors; the museum is arranged around the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Didier, which was integrated into the modern building.
The route covers archaeology from prehistory to the Gallo-Roman period (Bronze Age swords, Celtic torcs, a mosaic of Bacchus, a statue of a Roman emperor), medieval and Renaissance sculpture, decorative arts (cutlery, faience, furniture), paintings, drawings and prints from the 16th to the 20th century, and early photographs. Egyptian, ethnographic and natural history collections complete the display.
The centrepiece is “Jésus parmi les docteurs” by José de Ribera, displayed in the nave. The museum also highlights artists linked to Langres, such as Jean Tassel, Claude Gillot and Jules-Claude Ziegler. A single ticket gives access to this museum and to the Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot.
