About the museum

The Bourbonne-les-Bains municipal museum was founded in 1874 and installed in 1910 in the outbuildings of the former medieval castle. Its collections first came from local archaeological excavations, then from gifts and purchases. Today it occupies the barn and part of the stables of the castle, within the cultural center opened in 2003, the other part of which houses the media library. It holds the “Musée de France” label.

The circuit tells the story of a spa town from antiquity, a seigneurial castle in the Middle Ages and a place of artistic activity in the 19th century. The archaeology room presents Gallo-Roman remains of the spa town: votive offerings, funerary and votive stelae, the statue of the goddess Damona, mineralized aurochs horns and a major coin collection.

The painting room displays works by artists or donors linked to Bourbonne-les-Bains and Haute-Marne, such as René-Xavier Prinet, Clément Serveau and Georges Fréset. Ethnographic objects can also be seen, including two pieces from the Marquesas Islands, and a collection of taxidermied birds assembled in the 1870s. A final room hosts temporary exhibitions.
