About the museum
The museum, opened in 1992 in Champlitte, is one of the departmental museums of Haute-Saône. Its collections extend in time those of the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions at the Champlitte château, and present shops and workshops from the first half of the 20th century.
The route gives an overview of technical developments in the first decades of the 20th century. The steam engine, invented in the 17th century, was constantly improved and was widely used in transport, heavy industry and agriculture. The gas generator (gazogène) and the internal-combustion engine then transformed transport, and electricity allowed machines to be used more flexibly in industry.
These techniques also transformed the automobile, which appeared alongside animal-drawn vehicles that were still the majority, and trades: workshops became mechanised while keeping traditional know-how. The museum has a garden, an orchard, a pond, a beehive and an area left wild, used for educational activities.
