About the museum
The Pithiviers municipal museum was founded in 1896 by three enthusiasts of art and local history: Paul Martellière, Arsène Baillard and Dr Prud’homme. It rested on an initial donation in 1857 of a collection of ancient coins and medals, and on the wish to keep in the region the results of local archaeological and prehistoric excavations.
At first, the town made two rooms on the second floor of the town hall available. In 1909 the collections were moved to the former Hôtel-Dieu buildings, where they remain today. Many benefactors have enriched the holdings over time. The town owns the collections; management was run by an association from 1896 to 2001, the year a first professional curator was recruited.
The collections are encyclopaedic: fine arts, non-European ethnography, archaeology, and local art and history. More than 5,000 objects are estimated. The museum has been closed to the public since 2001, but the town’s teams continue to manage, conserve and restore the collections, and more than 1,000 objects can be consulted online. A project to reopen the museum at the Château de Bellecour is under way.
