About the museum

The museum's collections originate from the seizure of property belonging to the clergy and émigrés during the Revolution. A first museum was set up in Saint-Brieuc in 1796; the collections then moved several times during the 19th century before being entrusted to the town.

From 1981 the former gendarmerie barracks, built in the mid-19th century on the site of a former college, was chosen to house the museum. The old stables opened in 1983 for temporary exhibitions, and the permanent galleries opened in 1986.

The museum, which holds the Musée de France label, explores the experience of the people of the Côtes-d'Armor: maritime communities and deep-sea fishing on the ground floor, agricultural work and textiles (from flax to linen) on the second floor, and stereotypes about Brittany on the third floor, with the holdings of the Saint-Brieuc photographer Lucien Bailly.
