About the museum
The Toul museum has existed since 1872. Until 1939, it occupied part of the former episcopal palace, shared with the town hall and administrative services. Since 1985, it has been housed in the former Maison-Dieu, a medieval hospital whose foundation may date back to the 10th century. Much of the carved stonework is displayed in the former chapel of the Sick (chapelle des Malades), built in the 13th century; the infirmary hall, the chapel, the cloister and the entrance gate have been listed as historic monuments since 1980.
Michel Hachet, curator from 1985, gave the museum new impetus; it was named after him in 2019. The collections cover archaeology, history, ethnology, decorative arts and fine arts: a mammoth tusk, a seven-meter Gallo-Roman dugout canoe found near Chaudeney-sur-Moselle, Merovingian finds, the cenotaph of Saint Mansuy and a 16th-century Pietà in the lapidarium, tapestries, Toul-Bellevue faience, and paintings, including works attributed to François Boucher and Jacques Callot.
A room of Russian icons, opened in 2008, and memorabilia of General Patton, honorary citizen of Toul, are also part of the visit. The museum is run by the city of Toul.
