About the museum
The Vaucouleurs museum is devoted to depictions of Joan of Arc since the Middle Ages, in literature, art and history. Vaucouleurs played a major role in Joan's story: the ruined castle, the Porte de France and the crypt where she is said to have prayed before the statue of Notre-Dame des Voûtes all bear witness to this.
The museum was renovated in 2024, and some works previously kept in storage are now on display. Its collections are arranged in four sections: drawings, prints, stained-glass cartoons, bronze sculptures and posters. They show Joan as a virgin, a warrior and a martyr.
The museum holds most of the cartoons for the 26 windows of a chapel, made by the Nancy workshop Höner, Benoît and Janin. The guided tour also leads to the wedding hall of the town hall, which contains an 1886 painting by Jean-Jacques Scherrer showing Joan leaving Vaucouleurs.
