About the museum
The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Pissarro-Pontoise (MAHPP) is the museum of the City of Pontoise, a town of art and history. It grew out of the initiative of the association Les amis de Camille Pissarro and opened in 1980, for the 150th anniversary of the painter's birth. Originally it occupied only the first floor of a bourgeois house; since March 2017 it has spanned two levels of the renovated building.
The museum is housed in a townhouse dating from the late 19th century, built on the site of the former royal castle, at the top of the ramparts from the time of Philip II Augustus. It offers a wide panorama over the town and the Oise, which can also be enjoyed from the park and terrace, both open free of charge to visitors. The park includes a sensory garden, the Jardin des cinq sens (Garden of the Five Senses).
The MAHPP showcases the City of Pontoise's collections: the historic holdings from the Musée Tavet-Delacour, currently closed for major works, and the Musée Camille-Pissarro collection. The selection brings together works by Camille Pissarro and his sons, as well as landscape painters such as Caillebotte, Daubigny, Guillaumin, Signac, Cézanne, Béliard, Jiménez and Thornley, roughly from 1860 to 1910.
