About the museum
The museum occupies a late 15th-century mansion, the former residence of the vicar-general of Pontoise. With its corner turrets, pepper-pot roofs, mullioned windows and interior beams, it is a rare survival of civil architecture from the late Gothic period. After the Revolution, the building served as a prefecture and later as a civil court.
The museum was founded in 1889 at the initiative of Camille Tavet, a member of the Société historique de Pontoise, who proposed to the town that his collections be housed there. After the death of its founder it took the name Tavet, and then Tavet-Delacour. The building was restored in 1948 and 1960.
The town's historical collections were brought together at the end of the 19th century. In 1968, the donation of Otto Freundlich, consisting of the artist's studio holdings, steered the museum towards modern and contemporary art. It holds the largest surviving body of work by this precursor of abstraction. The museum has since received or acquired works by Matisse, Hans Arp, Gleizes, Aurélie Nemours, Diego Giacometti and Marcelle Cahn.
An annex, the Musée Camille Pissarro, opened in 1980. The Musée Tavet-Delacour is currently closed for works.
