About the museum
The museum grew out of the Association des Amis de L'Isle-Adam, registered in 1939 by Dr Louis Senlecq, a surgeon, local historian and mayor of the town. He wanted to create a museum devoted to the history of the commune and to the artists who had marked it. The first collections were housed in part of the Maison des Joséphites, built in 1661 by Prince Armand de Bourbon-Conti, and were shown to the public in 1950.
In the 1990s, building work extended the museum across all three floors of the building. In 1998 the Centre d'art Jacques Henri Lartigue opened in a restored annex for modern and contemporary art. The original rooms, which had become outdated, closed in 2006, and temporary exhibitions moved to this annex. A curator was recruited as early as 1992; the collections became municipal in 1999, and in 2002 the museum received the “Musée de France” label.
The collections tell the story of the town: paintings and prints from the era of the princes of Conti, terracotta figurines from local workshops, Méran stoneware from the manufactory, works of the Oise riverside school around Jules Dupré, watercolours by Jules Romain Joyant, silverware by Christian Fjerdingstad, and the holdings of paintings and photographs by Jacques Henri Lartigue.
