About the museum

The Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg opened in December 1998. It occupies a building designed by the architect Adrien Fainsilber, built on the site of the former municipal slaughterhouses on the banks of the Ill, near the Vauban weir and the railway station. A large glass-roofed nave serves as an internal street and leads to the collection and exhibition rooms; at the top of the façade, blue neon lights trace the Fibonacci sequence.

The permanent display covers the period from 1870 to today and brings modern and contemporary art into dialogue, from Impressionism and Fauvism to current works. It is regularly rearranged. The museum holds many works by Jean Arp and Victor Brauner, as well as a large painting by Gustave Doré, Le Christ quittant le prétoire.

The collections comprise about 6,000 paintings, sculptures, design pieces and installations, a graphic arts cabinet of about 15,000 drawings and prints, and a photography collection of about 4,000 works. They have been enriched by long-term loans from major national institutions such as the Musée d’Orsay and the Centre Pompidou. The building also houses an auditorium and the library of the city museums.
