About the museum
The Musée d'Ennery occupies the Hôtel d'Ennery at 59 avenue Foch. The building was kept unchanged at the wish of its owners, then bequeathed to the State and opened in 1908. It is attached to the Musée Guimet and is considered the last great centre of Japonisme in France.
The collection was long attributed to the journalist and playwright Adolphe Philippe d'Ennery. In fact it was assembled by his companion, Clémence Desgranges, initially an actress. She took an interest in the arts of China and Japan at an early stage and became one of the few women collectors of her time. She wanted this museum as early as 1890, and the collection was given to the State so that it could be opened to the public.
The collection numbers about 7,000 objects of Asian art, first Chinese and then mostly Japanese. They are displayed in a very dense arrangement, as Clémence d'Ennery intended: okimono (small Japanese sculptures), lacquers, Kyoto ceramics, Noh masks, figures of deities and buddhas, numerous netsuke, scholars' objects, chimera ceramics, porcelain and statuettes.
The museum is currently closed for renovation. Its reopening has been announced for 2028.
