About the museum
The museum is housed in the Château Gaillard, on rue Noé in Vannes. This stone mansion dates from the 15th century and has a 17th-century extension; the Parlement de Bretagne sat there from 1456 to 1532. The building retains large fireplaces, painted beams and 66 painted panels with religious subjects.
The collections present the archaeology of Morbihan, with Neolithic grave goods, Bronze Age and Iron Age objects, and Gallo-Roman finds. Some of them come from the Société polymathique du Morbihan, a learned society founded in Vannes in 1826, whose objects have been displayed at the Château Gaillard since 1912. In December 2019, the society gave the City of Vannes a collection of about 40,000 objects.
The museum is currently closed for works, and no reopening date has been announced. During the closure, part of the collections, including medieval floor tiles, is shown in a display case at the Musée des beaux-arts La Cohue.
