About the museum

The museum occupies the abbey tower of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, a remnant of the former Benedictine abbey. The tower, which served as a corner and portal of the abbey church, was built between 1626 and 1640 under Abbot Nicolas Dubois. It is 82 metres high, has been listed as a historic monument since 1846 and illustrates Counter-Reformation architecture.

The museum opened in 1950. On the first floor, a large hall beneath a sculpted stone vault hosts temporary exhibitions. Upstairs, the permanent collections trace the town's ceramic production: 18th-century faience with decoration inspired by the Far East, followed by industrial production of the 19th and 20th centuries, which shows the evolution of techniques.

The central hall, beneath a high vault with pointed arches, brings together works linked to the history of the abbey: paintings, portraits of abbots and a 16th-century Virgin and Child. It also presents sculptures and religious paintings from the Southern Netherlands, from the 16th to the 18th century. The collections also include contemporary ceramics. The museum is a municipal museum of the town of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux.
