About the museum

The museum is run by an association and is located in Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, a delegated commune of Mauges-sur-Loire, the town where the first uprisings of the Vendée wars took place in 1793. It holds old clothing, headdresses, weapons and original documents from the 18th and 19th centuries that help to understand the causes of this conflict.

The display cases also show religious objects and ornaments, items recalling the presence of the Vikings in the 10th and 11th centuries, models on the history of Loire river transport, and paintings.

Every summer an exhibition is devoted to the great Vendée war. It begins with a film on the background to the uprising, then presents the main Vendée leaders, notably Charette, Stofflet and Bonchamps. A small bookshop offers books and comics on the subject. In 2026 the summer exhibition was set up in the Cathelineau chapel.
