About the museum
The Musée du génie in Angers presents itself as a unique place in France dedicated to the history and missions of military engineers (sappers). It opened in 2009, after its museum design was developed between 2004 and 2009 by the association Amis du Musée du Génie together with several design firms and specialist companies.
The permanent and temporary exhibitions draw on a rich collection of vehicles and equipment, authentic technical objects and scale models. The route shows how military engineers shaped battlefields: fortifications, bridges for river crossings, mine clearance, and operations in war zones. It highlights their strategic role in peacetime as well as in wartime, from antiquity to today’s operations.
The association was founded on November 13, 1997 and recognized as being of general interest in 2004. It has about 330 members and continues to support the museum and its communications. The museum also offers documentation, virtual tours, visitor booklets and educational programs for schools.
