About the museum
The natural history museum of Marciac is housed on the second floor of the town hall. It is based on the collection assembled by Édouard Abeilhé, departmental councillor for Marciac. His son Joseph gave it to the town in 1935, and the museum bears his name.
The zoology collection includes about 300 birds and eggs, mostly of local species but also some exotic ones, as well as stuffed mammals, a small insect collection with wasp nests, a few reptiles, a sawfish rostrum, coral colonies, sea urchins, shells and the shells of land and freshwater molluscs.
The museum also presents many rock and mineral samples, a fossil collection with some plant and vertebrate remains, and prehistoric tools and Neolithic pieces. The display cases, of charming old style, show the diversity of the living world and the history of the Earth.
