About the museum

The Mirande museum originated in a bequest from Joseph Delort, a resident of Mirande, art lover and man of letters, who was then head of the fine arts department at the Ministry of the Interior. It was founded in 1832. The collections were first housed in the former chapel of the Poor Clares, and the museum moved after the First World War. It took its present form in 1983, and since 2015 the entrance has been through the reception of the tourist office.

The museum holds the “Musée de France” label and belongs to the network of museums of the Gers department. It brings together more than 400 works from the 15th to the 19th century, mostly portraits from the great Italian, Flemish, Dutch and French schools, including a Flemish “Adoration des bergers”. Some pieces are on loan from the State or from the Louvre. A collection of faience and porcelain, enriched in 1907 by the bequest of Léonce Passerieu, includes pieces from Nevers, Moustiers and Sceaux. Together with the museum in Auch, it is the richest collection of classical art in the department. In summer, contemporary artists exhibit on the upper floor.
