About the museum
The museum was founded in 1852 on a proposal from the Société des Sciences, d’Agriculture et de Belles-Lettres du Tarn-et-Garonne, which wanted to open its members’ private collections to the public. The naturalist Victor Brun became its curator in 1857 and brought together much of the original collections, which is why the museum bears his name.
The institution is housed in the former Cour des aides palace in Montauban. The collections include birds from around the world, mammals, primates, shells, insects and fossils from the Quercy phosphorites.
The museum also holds a fragment of the Orgueil meteorite, which fell near Montauban in 1864. Since April 2021, a stuffed brown bear named Nénette has been the museum’s mascot. A permanent display is devoted to the birds of Tarn-et-Garonne.
