About the museum
The museum was born at the beginning of the 20th century from two initiatives: that of the painter José Belon, who gathered gifts from artists for a fine arts museum, and that of the félibre (a member of the Provençal literary movement) Albert Roux, who founded a “Museon Uzétien” devoted to local traditions. The two collections were combined in 1910 in the town hall of Uzès, together with a collection of local archaeology.
After the Second World War the museum had fallen into neglect. Georges Borias, a drawing teacher at the Lycée d’Uzès, revived and enriched it, and for more than forty years he looked after the collection on a voluntary basis. The museum now bears his name and is recognized as a “Musée de France”. Since 1978 it has occupied the former 17th-century episcopal palace.
The route presents the archaeology of the Uzège from prehistory to the Gallo-Roman period, life in the town under the Ancien Régime, painted furniture and a large room of local pottery. It also includes painters associated with Uzès and a room devoted solely to André Gide, who spent his childhood holidays in the town, as well as a reminder of the young Jean Racine’s stay in 1661.
