About the museum
The museum occupies a room in the former Pasteur school, built in 1883 in the Sart-Babylone district. The school closed at the start of the 1979 school year. Its last principal, Étienne Notardonato (in office from 1972 to 1979), turned a classroom into a museum that now bears his name: the Classe-Musée Étienne Notardonato.
The building is now the Pasteur neighborhood center (maison de quartier). The museum recreates a classroom from the past in a setting from the 1930s to the 1960s: blackboard, dais, teacher's desk, benches, inkwells, pen holders, slates, abacus, coal stove and a 1930 piano. A rare piece completes the ensemble: a 1952 telecine.
Visitors become schoolchildren: a teacher gives them lessons in morals, spelling, arithmetic, geography, history or science. According to the tourist office's information sheet, the visit also includes a certificat d'études dictation, written with a pen.
