About the museum

The Musée de l'Histoire Maritime de Bordeaux opened in June 2017. It grew out of the work of the Marinopole Bordeaux collective, founded in 2004 by Daniel Binaud, who comes from a family of shipbrokers, with the aim of restoring Bordelais pride in the city's past as a port. The Musée maritime de Bordeaux had closed in 1973 and its collections had left the city, so the project took up the subject on new foundations.

The museum occupies hangar G2 in the Bassins à flot district, on the banks of the Garonne. Its collections come largely from donations by Bordeaux families: engravings, paintings, old books, sea charts, navigation instruments and ship models.

The route is chronological and follows the history of the Port de la Lune from the Gallo-Roman period onward. It features figures such as Aliénor d'Aquitaine, Montaigne, Colbert, Montesquieu and Lafayette, as well as the trade in wine, sugar, cocoa, coffee and cod, and the city's colonial past. A virtual reality experience lets visitors fly over the quays, and a smartphone app offers a historical walk along the quays.
