About the museum
The Bordeaux Historia Vini association was founded in November 2007 to promote the heritage and special past of the Chartrons district. It carried the project for a museum devoted to wine and its trade, conceived by its founding president, Grégory Pecastaing. The museum also aims to be a meeting place around current wine news, thanks to its links with Bordeaux winegrowers.
It occupies the building of Louis XV’s royal broker, in the iconic Port de la Lune district. The imposing façade, the vaulted cellars and the cooperage evoke the daily life of the négociants and wine merchants of the 19th century. The shop is housed in the former cooperage, and the permanent collection has replaced the barrels in the semi-underground cellars.
The collection brings together documents, rare bottles, films and winemaking equipment. It traces the development of Bordeaux and its trading port from Antiquity to the 20th century, the role of the merchant families of the Chartrons, and the history of barrel ageing, bottles, labels and corks. The visit ends with a tasting commented on by a mediator.
