About the museum

The museum is run by the association Bordeaux Historia Vini, founded in November 2007 to promote the heritage of the Chartrons district through a project on wine and its trade. It opened in 2008. Its founder and president, Grégory Pecastaing, wanted to tell the story of the trade that shaped the city for centuries.

The museum occupies the former building of the royal broker of Louis XV, in the heart of the Chartrons, the quarter of the merchants of the Port de la Lune. The façade, the vaulted cellars and the former cooperage evoke everyday life for the négociants-éleveurs of the 19th century. The permanent collection takes the place of the barrels in the semi-underground cellars, while the shop is housed in the former cooperage.

The route traces the evolution of Bordeaux and its port from Antiquity to the 20th century, as well as wine-related techniques: barrel ageing, and the evolution of bottles, labels and corks. Documents, rare bottles, films and winemaking equipment illustrate this history. The visit ends with a guided tasting of two wines.
