About the museum
The Musée de l’île d’Oléron is located on Place Gambetta in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron. It is run by the communauté de communes of the Île d’Oléron and holds the “Musée de France” label.
It presents the island’s inhabitants, their activities and traditions through old objects and costumes. The route covers the island’s history from prehistory to the 19th century, traditional headdresses and costumes, the life of an Oléron family in the 19th century, viticulture, pine resin tapping (gemmage), salt production (saliculture), shellfish gathering on foot at low tide (pêche à pied), as well as sea bathing and tourism.
