About the museum
The museum was founded in 1995 in La Planche, Loire-Atlantique, on the initiative of Maurice Lecorps, together with Serge Urso and the then deputy and mayor, Lucien Richard. It opened on June 24, 1995. It pays tribute to the artists who shaped French chanson in the 20th century.
It occupies a former chapel of the Oblates of Chantenay, located in the Jacques Brel cultural centre in the heart of the village. The building belonged to a retirement home that closed in 1991.
The collections include wax and vinyl records, gold discs, photographs, posters and books, as well as objects linked to artists, such as Georges Brassens's pipe or an Édith Piaf microphone. Working vintage equipment is on display: gramophones, a phonograph, a jukebox, a barrel organ and a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Since 2023, a team of volunteers, including about ten singers, has run and animated the museum. Visitors can consult documents on chanson and listen to vinyl records, CDs and cassettes.
