About the museum
The Musée de la Lavande opened in 1991 in Coustellet, in the Luberon Regional Nature Park. It was founded by Georges Lincelé, from a family of lavender growers, pickers and distillers, who was also a collector of objects relating to the history of lavender and Provence. The family has grown and distilled lavender since 1890.
The museum calls itself the first and only museum devoted exclusively to true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). It traces its history, botany, harvest, distillation and uses, from the 16th century to today.
The collection includes numerous stills from the 16th century to the present, 346 heritage objects, farm tools and old labels. The route features botanical areas, a screening room and a digital table. In summer, distillation demonstrations take place in the gardens with a late 19th-century copper still.
