About the museum
Le Monde Souterrain is set on the banks of the Sorgue, at the Vallis Clausa site in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. It honors Norbert Casteret, a pioneer of speleology, and offers an overview of the world of caves.
The visit begins with an account of recent explorations, narrated by cave explorers, which helps explain the mysteries of the Fontaine de Vaucluse, presented as the first open-air vertical spring in Europe. The route continues through a full-scale, fully reconstructed setting: waterfalls, an underground river, frescoes and prehistoric traces evoke a world whose exploration begins with the origins of humanity.
The visit ends in front of about 400 cave crystallizations gathered by Norbert Casteret over fifty years of exploration. According to the museum, this is today the only collection of its kind still open to the public, because the caves are now protected.
