About the museum

The Musée de la meunerie is housed in the Marcy mill, a water mill driven by the Siette, a small tributary of the Tortonne. Until the French Revolution it belonged to the abbey of Cerisy. In the 15th century it depended on the Marcy farm; enlarged over time, it now includes buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The last miller, Victor Pannier, became owner of the mill in 1923 and remained so until his death in 1975. Milling stopped in 1952. His descendants transferred the site to the commune of Le Molay-Littry in 1983, and after three years of building work the mill was inaugurated as a museum on June 28, 1986. In 2009 a new oak wheel replaced the old one.

The visit shows a mechanism still in place: an overshot wheel about 3.33 m in diameter, and three pairs of millstones in the upper chamber. The site was also a small farm. Its dairy, stable, storeroom, bakery and carriage shed have regained their equipment and tools.
