About the museum
The Mining Museum opened in 1990 in the former machine house of the Bayard site in Brassac-les-Mines. This building generated and converted the energy needed to extract coal. The last coal skip was hauled up the shaft on July 28, 1978, and the buildings were preserved after mining ended.
The museum honours the miners and tells the story of coal mining in the Brassac basin over five centuries. The route includes 160 metres of galleries faithfully reconstructed to show the miners' daily work and living conditions.
Visits are either guided or, depending on the period, self-guided with an audio guide available in German, English, French and Italian.
