About the museum
The museum opened in 2000. It brings together the works of some hundred painters who stayed in Murol and its surroundings during the first half of the 20th century. The word “école” here refers to a group of artists rather than a teaching institution: it arose from the meeting of three painters, Wladimir de Terlikowski, Victor Charreton and Abbé Léon Boudal, the village priest, who was also a painter.
Charreton and Terlikowski met in Besse during the winter of 1911 and found Abbé Boudal again in Murol the following winter. They attracted many artists from the region, from the rest of the country and from abroad, who painted together on the motif. These painters belong to Post-Impressionism and specialised in snowy landscapes. The group gradually faded after the deaths of Boudal in 1934 and Charreton in 1936, until the 1950s.
Today the collection comprises some 300 works, assembled through gifts, acquisitions and long-term loans. The commune of Murol and the Association des Amis du Musée de Murol regularly acquire new pieces. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions devoted to a painter, a technique or a theme linked to the École de Murol.
