About the museum
The museum was created in 1979 and fully redeveloped in 2000. It occupies the former Aubin mining site in the Pays Noir and illustrates the industrial history of the Aubin–Decazeville basin. Several tourist sites describe it as a branch of the Musée du Rouergue.
The collections include archive documents, photographs and mining equipment. Notable are a set of miners’ lamps and a large series of trade guild flags and banners, which show the life and working conditions of miners in different periods.
The visit passes through a mine gallery designed by former miners, with life-size figures recreating an old working face, a modern extraction site with a conveyor, the snack break, and wooden and metal roof supports. It ends with a simulation of a firedamp explosion. An audiovisual room screens six films about mines and miners, about 15 minutes in total.
