About the museum
The Musée d'histoire de Figeac preserves the material memory of the town and the Lot department, as well as traces of the distant journeys of its many donors. It holds the “Musée de France” label. It was previously housed on the second floor of the Hôtel de la Monnaie under the name Musée du Vieux Figeac; it opened in its current premises on November 23, 2012, and reopened to the public in July 2013.
It is attached to the restored salons of the former Collège-Séminaire du Puy, one of the town's main monuments at the end of the 17th century, whose superior's apartments display rich carved wood panelling and painted canvases. The presentation draws partly on cabinets of curiosities: visitors can see works from the Lot by the Catalan painter Pierre Daura, gifts presented to President Georges Pompidou, such as elephant tusks and fantasia saddles, prehistoric tools, firearms, stuffed animals, minerals and fossils from the region, painted portraits and furniture, including the sacristy cabinet from the church of Notre-Dame-du-Puy.
