About the museum

The Musée Joseph-Fau is set in a former residence, opposite the Plô fountain, below the church square. It brings together works and objects from the abbey and the abbey church of Conques across several floors.

On the first floor are mainly painted and gilded wooden statues from the 15th to 17th centuries, a 17th-century choir lectern and an 1843 painting showing the abbey church without its two façade towers. The second floor presents furniture and decorative elements from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as seven Felletin tapestries made shortly before 1634. They tell the life of Mary Magdalene and originally decorated the abbey's chapter house.

In the basement are the old Romanesque floor of the abbey church, Romanesque capitals from the cloister and older fragments from the 10th-century church. The museum complements the visit to the Trésor de Conques, with which it usually shares its ticket.
