About the museum

The Porte Broërec guarded the eastern entrance to the fortified town of Hennebont. Its two towers, built with the 13th-century fortifications, were first used for defence and later as a prison: Spanish soldiers defeated at Rocroi in 1643, Marion du Faouët around 1746 and convicts from the Brest penal colony at the beginning of the 19th century were held there.

In 1910, a museum of the Basse-Bretagne region was founded here by Dr. Gabriel Desjacques. The towers were set on fire during the bombing of August 8, 1944, and restored between 1967 and 1972. The association Hennebont-Patrimoine, founded in April 1984, now runs the museum.

The route, spread over ten rooms, presents the history and traditions of Hennebont and the Lorient area: Breton furniture, costumes, Fouillen faience, the Blavet and the port, the two world wars and a medieval room.
