About the museum
The idea of a postal museum was launched at the end of the 19th century. Following a decree of 1943, the museum opened on June 4, 1946 in the Hôtel de Choiseul-Praslin in Paris. It later moved to a modern building designed for it by the architect André Chatelin, on boulevard de Vaugirard near Montparnasse station, which opened in December 1973. The brutalist façade is decorated with reliefs by the sculptor Robert Juvin and in 2021 received the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label.
The museum closed in 2015 for a complete renovation of its architecture and displays, then reopened on November 23, 2019 under the name Musée Postal. It holds the “Musée de France” label.
Its collections number about 1.27 million objects, including more than one million philatelic pieces, as well as images, historical objects, books and mail art works. The museum also holds the production archives of French postage stamps. The permanent display covers three levels: the means of transporting mail, the trades of La Poste, and finally art and the stamp.
