Temporarily closed. The museum is currently not open to the public on a regular basis. It opens only on exceptional occasions, such as the European Heritage Days (Saturday, September 19, 2026, 10:00 to 17:00, for guidance only).

About the museum

The museum belongs to the Association Valentin Haüy, which named it after the 18th-century philanthropist who founded the first French school for blind children. Louis Braille was a pupil there. It was created on the initiative of Edgard Guilbeau, himself blind.

The visit places the invention of Braille in its historical context and shows the everyday life of blind and visually impaired people, including their rights as citizens. The collections include embossed books, guidance tools and writing tablets, globes, maps, calculating instruments, old typewriters and printing presses, prints and photographs. The Art Nouveau furniture gives the rooms the feel of a cabinet of curiosities.

The visit places great emphasis on touch, in particular with a large Braille globe of the Earth and original editions of Louis Braille’s method.
