About the museum
The Espace mémoriel de la Résistance et de la Déportation is located at 34 rue de Genève, in the historic centre of Angoulême. It succeeds the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation d'Angoulême, which had been attached to the Charente Departmental Archives since August 2009. The current setup was created in 2014 and is run by the Charente Department.
The permanent route combines archive images, texts, maps, objects and audiovisual media. It covers five major themes of the 1939–1945 period: the occupation, repression, deportation, the Resistance and liberation, always with a focus on Charente.
The site is also a place of learning. It offers teachers educational files, exhibition booklets, loanable exhibitions and video testimonies collected in 2014, in connection with the Concours national de la Résistance et de la Déportation.
