About the museum

The Musée d’art et d’histoire de Cognac, also called the Maison du négociant, occupies the town mansion of the Dupuy d’Angeac family, cognac merchants, built in 1838 according to tourist sources. The house recalls the period when cognac began to be exported far beyond France’s borders.

The very rich collections make it possible to recreate interiors of a late 19th-century town mansion, such as Madame’s boudoir. They reflect the passions of the merchants and their families: some travelled and brought back objects from afar, others were amateur archaeologists or collectors of paintings, sculpture and 17th-century Delft faience. An archaeology room displays, among other things, a Neolithic dugout canoe (pirogue).

A redesigned route invites visitors to discover the private life of these families and their role in the town. Together with the Musée des savoir-faire du cognac, the museum belongs to the “Les Distillateurs culturels” network of Grand Cognac and holds the “Musée de France” label. It also presents temporary exhibitions with mediation activities.
