About the museum

The Bayard Resistance group was founded in Joigny on May 1, 1941 by Paul Herbin, together with his family and a few close associates. It became one of the most important movements in the Yonne. Joigny was liberated on August 22, 1944, and the group was disbanded at the end of September 1944; many of its members joined the 1er régiment des volontaires de l'Yonne, formed in Joigny.

On February 19, 1945, the former fighters of Bayard set up a mutual-aid and memorial association, which installed a memorial in two rooms of a barracks made available by the town. Photographs of the missing, German propaganda posters, Allied leaflets and captured equipment were gathered there, but the site was open only during ceremonies and meetings.

In 1967 the memorial was moved to its current address on rue Boffrand and became an association museum open to the public. Research carried out with academics, teachers and the museum curator of the Yonne department led to a new display, inaugurated in 1995. The route broadens the subject to the Resistance in the Yonne and includes sections on deportation and on the 1er régiment des volontaires de l'Yonne. The premises remain cramped.
