About the museum
The Musée de la Rose is housed in the former station of Grisy-Suisnes in Seine-et-Marne. The station opened in 1892 on the Paris-Bastille – Verneuil-l'Étang line, known as the Vincennes line, one of the last lines created from Paris. Tons of roses were shipped from here to be sold overnight at the Carreau des Halles; from 1900 the trains were nicknamed the “trains des rosiéristes” (rose growers' trains). The line was permanently closed in 1964.
In 1990 the building was given a new use and housed several village associations. In 2011 it was assigned to the association Grisy-Suisnes au gré des roses, founded in 2006, which runs the museum. Visitors discover the history of rose cultivation in the region, known as the “pays des roses”.
Next to the museum, a 1,700 m² rose garden was planted: 2,000 rootstocks were put in the ground in November 2011, grafted in August 2012 and first bloomed in June 2013, the date of the site's inauguration. Visitors can stroll freely, compare the colours and scents of the roses and have a picnic; a refreshment kiosk serves hot and cold drinks.
