About the museum

The Musée de Provins et du Provinois is housed in the Maison romane (Romanesque House), one of the oldest secular buildings in Provins, a medieval town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The facade dates from the 12th century and is decorated with a “diamond” window. The museum holds the “Musée de France” designation.

The collections, spread over four levels, tell the story of the town and its region from prehistory to the 19th century, with the Renaissance along the way. They come in particular from archaeological excavations in Provins and the surrounding area.

Among the notable pieces are remains of the treasure of the church of Saint-Quiriace, including gold monstrances and the chasuble of Saint Edme, as well as sculptures, paintings and rare objects such as a foundling wheel (tour d'abandon), used to leave orphans at church doors. The museum also has confraternity staves from the 16th and 17th centuries, 13th-century water outlets, a set of medieval floor tiles, and objects linked to the Freemasonry of the Provins lodge L'Heureuse Alliance.
