About the museum
The museum grew out of the passion of Georges Junier, who discovered Esperanto in 1932 and from then on collected objects related to the language. In 1945 he founded a cultural centre in Gray devoted to Esperanto. After his retirement in 1973, he decided to create a museum with the support of French Esperanto associations.
In 1977 the museum moved to the second floor of a former secondary school that had become the Maison Pour Tous, with the support of the town council. It was officially inaugurated on May 16, 1987, one hundred years after Zamenhof published the language.
The ten rooms hold some 6,000 books and brochures, 1,400 journal and magazine titles, archives of Esperanto societies, manuscripts, posters, stamps, postcards and promotional items. In the neighbouring square, an elliptical sundial recalls the ideal of uniting peoples through a common language.
